What to wear on engagement session

Engagement Session: What to wear

I often get asked for recommendation on what to wear to an engagement photography session. Suggestions on what to wear:

  • Wear something you are comfortable in. If you’re not comfortable, it will show in the pictures. You are welcome to bring a couple of outfits for different looks.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes that restrict movement and clothes that accentuate curves you’re not best friends with.
  • You and your fiance(e) are the subject matter, so you want to wear something that reflects who you are and what you love. Wear something you love that brings out the real you and matches your normal personality.
  • Coordinate your outfits, but don’t wear the exact same thing. Stick to the same color family or complementary tones and bear in mind that darker colors are most slimming on women.
  • Wear clothes that are the same level of dressyness. Don’t dress up and have your fiance wear their everyday street clothes.
  • Avoid bright and bold clothings.
  • Watch for lengths in clothing. It is usually not that a good looking to have one person in shorts and the other person in pants, or one in a short sleeved shirt and the other in a long sleeved shirt.
  • Darker colors are slimming and they are also easier to photograph. But if you have something in white or off white, don’t be afraid to wear it.
  • Patterns go out of style quickly, and the background usually has enough texture that patterns can sometimes make the photos too busy.
  • Add a bit of extra love to your photos by having someone do your make-up and hair. And, if you’re all dolled up… it’s a perfect excuse for a post-session date night.
  • Wear shoes you love and shoes that you can walk comfortable in.
  • Bring two outfits: one that you wear everyday and the other more flowy — dress for the female and loose shirt for the male.
